Funding: General Funds

The position is permanent, full-time (9-month), general funds and tenure-track to begin approximately August 2024 or as soon as possible. Review of applications will begin on October 31, 2023 and continue until the position is filled.

Applicants who are ABD (All But Dissertation) will be reviewed, however, degree requirements must be met by the effective date of appointment.

Candidates are expected to establish a productive, externally funded research program in an area of Inorganic or Materials Chemistry and contribute to undergraduate and graduate Inorganic and/or Materials Chemistry teaching within the Chemistry Department. Research that is responsive to the strategic needs of the State of Hawai’i and synergizes with existing areas of interest within the department and university will receive special consideration. Examples of strategic needs include:

  • Materials chemistry that is focused on developing supramolecular or nanomolecular materials that are critical to advanced CO2 capture technologies that will facilitate the reduction of environmental CO2 levels. 
  • Inorganic chemistry that is focused on the design and synthesis of new catalysts that are key to the development of sustainable and environmentally responsible chemical transformations such as the electrocatalytic conversion of CO2 to high-value chemicals and nitrogen to ammonia.
  • Physical inorganic chemistry that is focused on the diffusion of CO2 in porous inorganic membranes. This knowledge is requisite for developing CO2 capture and separation technologies that are needed to significantly reduce global CO2 levels.

  • Direct the research activities of undergraduate and graduate students in an area of chemistry.
  • Participateinadvanceddegree candidate committees.
  • Conductresearchorundertakecomparablescholarlyactivity.
  • Serveon department and universitycommittees.
  • Performrelatedtasksasassigned.

Minimum Qualifications 

  1. Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field from a recognized university.
  2. Demonstrated ability as a teacher. 
  3. Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
  4. Poise and good address for meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications

  1. Commitment to support inclusion, mutual respect, collaboration, and equity, so that people from all backgrounds feel welcome and can thrive.
  2. At least two years of postdoctoral research experience (or equivalent).
  3. Graduate and/or postdoctoral research in Inorganic or Materials Chemistry or a closely related field.
  4. Demonstrated ability to effectively teach Inorganic and/or Materials Chemistry courses.
  5. Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students.
  6. Evidence of research productivity and potential for establishing a vigorous, funded research program in Inorganic Chemistry or a closely related field.
  7. Research interests that are responsive to the strategic needs of the University and the State of Hawai‘i.
